Construction worker trapped in trench under backhoe in Oshawa, rescue crews on scene

Oshawa firefighters are working to rescue a construction worker pinned under the bucket of a backhoe in a trench Tuesday morning.“Our crews are continuing to try to free the victim, he is trapped in the trench or in the hole,” said Oshawa Fire Services deputy chief Todd Wood said at 9:30 a.m..The man is trapped on Verdun Road just north of Eulalie Avenue.“He is conscious, he is talking to us, however, we’re also concerned about secondary collapse,” said Wood.Firefighters are attempting shore up the walls in the trench so they can rescue the man.Wood said he believes the man was working on a water main when the trench collapsed around 8:45 a.m.
