The man accused of pushing a passenger to his death at the Yonge/Bloor station made a brief court appearance in College Park court Tuesday morning.John Reszetnik, 57, has been charged with first-degree murder. His next court date will be July 17.Reszetnik, wearing a hooded white jumpsuit, stayed silent during the proceedings except to affirm to his lawyer that he was comfortable with the next court date.Asked if mental health is an issue, Det.-Sgt Gary Giroux told reporters it’s “always a factor” in these kinds of seemingly random crimes.READ MORE:Man killed after he was pushed off platform at Yonge/Bloor station Police said the victim was on the eastbound platform of Yonge station at about 10:15 a.m. Monday when he was pushed onto the tracks as the train entered the station. Homicide Det. Rob North said there was a brief interaction between the suspect and victim before the incident.The accused was arrested in the area about 20 minutes after the incident.Police have identified the victim, believed to be in his 50s or 60s, and are in the process of contacting next of kin. There were about 50 people at the station at the time, so it wasn’t very busy, a TTC official said.Police said there were passengers who left the scene before investigators could arrive at Yonge/Bloor station. Police are requesting anyone who saw this incident to call investigators at 416-808-7400. The last fatal subway pushing incident was in 1997. Charlene Minkowski, a 23-year-old law clerk, was waiting for a train at Dundas subway station when she was pushed by Herbert Cheong, a man with a history of mental illness.Cheong was convicted of second-degree murder after court heard he developed a plan to kill someone. A Crown attorney at the time called it “a form of urban terrorism . . . totally random.”In 2009, three boys were pushed into the path of a train at Dufferin station.
