Cancer death spurt fear over treatment delay

KOLKATA: The city and the state might soon witness a spurt in deaths, and the immediate cause for this would be the Covid pandemic, fear experts. The reason is simple: thousands of cancer patients, who were forced to defer treatment because of the lockdown and fears of contracting Covid, now find that their disease has progressed to an advanced stage. For many of them, treatment is now futile. The real irony is that at least half of them could have been saved, or lived longer, had they been treated over the last six months, say oncologists.
