Trash-collecting water wheel considered for Newport Beach would be first of its kind on West Coast

NEWPORT BEACH - A water wheel - it looks like a snail with a paddle wheel - might soon be visible from the Jamboree Road bridge over Upper Newport Bay. The vessel, which would be the first of its kind on the West Coast, uses old and new technology, combining the power of water and sunlight to collect litter and debris. When it’s up and running, city officials say, it could collect as much as 80 percent of the trash and debris from the ecologically sensitive bay preventing it from flowing into the harbor, the ocean and onto the beaches.
