`The CT scan of his head was normal.` Hearing this often gives great relief to a parent after their child has a head injury, but as a pediatrician, it only gives me partial relief. A normal CT scan means that there isn`t a fracture or any bleeding in the head which would be cause for immediate concern and possibly even an emergency surgery, but it does not mean the child has not had a concussion. By definition, a concussion is a brain injury sustained after trauma directly or indirectly transmitted to the head, resulting in a short-lived impairment of neurologic function. These types of injuries should not be seen on a CT scan since it`s a functional rather than a structural injury, so...
