New record highs for numbers of sea turtle nests

Posted On: November 14, 2017 Volusia County`s beaches were visited in record numbers this year, and we`re not just talking about the two-legged variety. Between May and October each year, dozens of volunteers comb the beach to mark new sea turtle nests and monitor them each day until the hatchlings emerge. County staff facilitates these efforts by providing assistance and tracking the collected data. During the 2017 season, 720 sea turtles nests were made in the dunes. This is the second highest nesting year on record in Volusia County. In 2017 volunteers and staff counted 634 loggerhead nests. The highest year on record, 2012, had 885 Loggerhead nests.
