Man arrested in fatal Newmarket shooting

A Newmarket man is facing a second-degree murder charge after a Georgina man was shot and killed Saturday evening.York Regional Police said they responded to a weapons call on Sheldon Ave., near Yonge St. and Davis Dr. in Newmarket around 9:50 p.m. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds.Paramedics rushed him to hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was identified as 30-year-old Cody Gionet.On Sunday, police said they arrested two men at a home close to the scene. Travis Whitman, 21, has been charged with second-degree murder. The other man was charged with unrelated offences, police said.Whitman was scheduled to appear in a Newmarket court on Monday.Investigators are looking for any additional witnesses who may have seen or heard anything during the incident.
