Bald eagles soar on the Eastern Shore

When I moved to the Eastern Shore in 1987, seeing a bald eagle was a rare and thrilling experience for a bird watcher. Now, it is close to being an everyday experience if you are aware of the birds in the air. In 1987, there were about 100 breeding pairs in Maryland. Today there are an estimated 3,000 nesting pairs in the Chesapeake watershed. In the 1930s there were only about 700 pair of bald eagles. We have no way of knowing the bald eagle population in the early days of colonization.
