Famed Douglass July 4th speech attracts crowd

EASTON — About 100 audience members joined 51 speakers on Saturday, July 4, at the Talbot County Courthouse in Easton as the Frederick Douglass Honor Society sponsored a re-enactment of an iconic 1852 speech once delivered by Talbot County`s native son. The original address, offered to members of the Rochester, New York, Ladies Anti-Slavery Society on July 5, 1852, is now known as the “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” speech. Over 700 printed copies were sold to abolitionists gathered at the event following the oration that day.
