TTC commuters evacuated mid-tunnel after fire at Dundas West station

Some TTC passengers were forced to evacuate their train in the middle of a subway tunnel after a small fire at Dundas West station.On Monday morning, the fire shut down subway service on Line 2 between Keele and Ossington stations for several hours, with roughly 25 shuttle buses called in for rush hour. A train heading west between Lansdowne and Dundas West was evacuated mid-tunnel.“The incident at Dundas West was not necessarily due to weather,� TTC spokesperson Hayley Waldman said. “Everybody was safely evacuated from the tunnel.�A video posted to Twitter by Tyler Patterson, a student at Humber College, shows people walking through the subway in a single-file line.Waldman added that the power in that area of the tunnel was shut off as a safety measure while the evacuation was ongoing.Speaking generally about mid-tunnel evacuations, “it’s something that’s happened before but it’s not something that happens with any regularity,� she said.Ilya Bañares is a breaking news reporter, working out of the Star`s radio room in Toronto.
