As we reported last week, August is often one of the quietest months at the box office, with the big Hollywood blockbusters already released and the more prestigious awards-oriented movies still a couple of months away. As late as the middle of last week, it looked like this would be the case for August 2018, with the month`s biggest new release--the shark thriller The Meg-- only predicted to pull in around $20 million over its first three days. However, in one of the biggest box office surprises of the year, The Meg has powered its way to an estimated $44 million opening weekend, more than double what industry experts predicted. The results ensure that the Jason Statham-starring film took the No.1 slot on the box office chart, and sets it well on the way to recouping its reported $130 million production budget. The movie, which is a Chinese co-production, also made $96.8 million internationally in its first three days. The week`s other new releases were the horror movie Slender Man, and Spike Lee`s comedy drama BlacKkKLansman. Slender Man has been met with some terrible reviews, but entered the chart at No.4 with an estimated $11 million, which was, again, more than double the estimate. BlacKkKLansman, conversely, has received rave reviews but was released on far fewer screens, and enjoyed a decent $10.8 million opening weekend to enter at No.5.Elsewhere, the hugely successful Mission Impossible: Fallout and the family sequel Christopher Robin slipped to No.2 and 3 respectively. The bottom half of the chart consisted mostly of titles that have stuck around for a few weeks, including Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, and Ant-Man and the Wasp. You can see the full Top 10 list for the August 10-12 US box office below, as compiled by Box Office Mojo.US/Canada Box Office For August 10-12:The Meg - $44.5 millionMission Impossible: Fallout - $20.0 millionDisney`s Christopher Robin - $12.4 millionSlender Man - $11.3 millionBlacKkKlansman ...
