Warner Brothers is making a film adaptation of Stephen King`s sequel to The Shining entitled Doctor Sleep which will star Ewan McGregor. The groundbreaking horror classic from 1980 remains one of the most revered horror films of all time, directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Jack Nicholson as the axe murderer who attempts to kill his family, including his young son Danny.Variety reports that the film focuses on Danny all grown-up as he deals with the reappearance of his psychic powers and some understandable emotional issues which have lead him to turn to alcohol. Danny now works in a hospice care facility, where he uses his abilities to help take care of patients on their way to the grave, which prompts the nickname `Doctor Sleep.`McGregor has had a pretty distinguished acting career, appearing in over 50 titles including films like Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge, and Star Wars Episodes I through III; now he`ll reportedly be adding The Shining sequel to that list. While McGregor has certainly played some gritty, dark roles in the past, we haven`t really seen him in a straight up horror movie, so it will be interesting to see how he does in the role. With films like Get Out and A Quiet Place taking the genre to new places and new levels of popularity, it will be exciting to see what director Mike Flanagan will do with the film. Flanagan previously directed an adaptation of another of Stephen King`s novels for Netflix, so clearly someone thought he did a good job. Doctor Sleep will be hitting theaters in 2020.
