Eyad al-Gharib, a former Syrian regime officer, was sentenced to four and a half years in prison in February for crimes against humanity. This case marks the first verdict against a Syrian official since the war started in 2011. The trial was held in the German city of Koblenz under the principle of universal jurisdiction, which allows for a national court to hold proceedings against violations of international law, regardless of where they occurred. Gharib was accused of taking 30 detained demonstrators to the al-Kathib prison in Damascus, also known as Branch 251. The prison is infamous for its use of torture and murder.
