Naegleria fowleri, or a brain-eating amoeba, is a microorganism found in fresh water that causes a brain infection. CDC Brain-eating amoeba called Naegleria fowleri killed Josiah McIntyre, 6, of Lake Jackson, Texas, on Sept. 8.
