Spurred by state, Tahlequah developed arts council

Funds allocated for the arts were slow in reaching Tahlequah, tucked away in the foothills of the Ozarks. Apparently, the community`s first organization to secure a grant from the Oklahoma Arts and Humanities Council was the Tahlequah Area Artists. The state council helped fund the Tahlequah group`s annual juried art exhibit for professional and amateur artists in late April 1969 in Northeastern State College`s new student union. In the summer, a grant from the OAHC enabled the Tulsa Philharmonic to return to Tahlequah for a pops concert.
