Schools open, expect driving and flight delays after freezing rain and snow hits GTA

Torontonians are waking up to a messy Monday — and a reasonable excuse to be late for work — after a late fall storm delivered a wallop of ice and snow.Earlier, Environment Canada had called for a mixture of freezing rain and up to 10 cm of snowfall on Sunday into Monday. They now estimate a few more centimetres of snow will fall on Monday before the skies open up for a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 0 C with a wind chill of -7 C.Despite the weather, the Toronto District School Board announced all buses will be running with expected delays.The Durham District School Board has cancelled buses in zones one through three, with zone four bus routes still operating. Schools remain open. In Halton, all schools are open and buses are operating in zones one and two, but cancelled in zone three.TTC spokesperson Hayley Walbman said all routes are holding up against the weather, although generally speaking, people should expect the road conditions to cause delays.The snow is causing some delays at Pearson. Travellers are advised to check their flight status before leaving for the airport. Many flights were delayed and cancelled on Sunday.The weather wreaked havoc on holiday festivities: Sunday’s Burlington and Mississauga Santa Claus Parades were cancelled, with Burlington citing “unsafe weather conditions and the declaration of a significant weather event.�Toronto Mayor John Tory tweeted about the extreme winter weather conditions on Sunday pleading for everyone to “please drive with extra caution on our roads� and to “be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get to where you’re going and remember to drive safe and look out for pedestrians.� Still, the Ontario Provincial Police said there were approximately 400 collisions in the GTA. “We have to make adjustments this time this season,� said Toronto Police Const.
