Severe thunderstorm warning lifted for Toronto, watch still in place Tuesday night

Environment Canada has lifted the severe thunderstorm warning that was in effect for the city of Toronto.The warning was issued close to 5:15 p.m., previously upgraded from a thunderstorm watch. It was in effect for 45 minutes before it was lifted. Environment Canada says a thunderstorm watch is still in place for Tuesday night.The agency said the thunderstorm may be capable of producing very strong winds and torrential rain. “Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes,” read Environment Canada’s website. “Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.” About 20 minutes of heavy rain and thunder hit downtown Toronto shortly after 5:15 p.m., giving way to partly cloudy skies.Toronto police say lightning split a hydro pole in half on Highfield Rd. north of Dundas St. E. The strike hit a main power source line, but there are no reports of power outages, Const.
