The devastated family of a toddler killed when an air conditioning unit fell from the eighth floor of a Scarborough Toronto Community Housing Building has hired a personal injury lawyer to get answers.“It’s absolutely brutal,” said Slavko Ristich, who said he’s been retained to conduct an investigation into the death of two-year-old Crystal Mirogho.The family released a statement late Tuesday night.“Our family has lost our precious baby girl Crystal,” the statement read. “We are devastated. We would ask that through this difficult time we be given the opportunity to grieve our loss privately. We wanted to thank the public for the outpouring of support for our family while we are struggling to cope this is tragedy.” At the centre of the investigation will be the TCHC’s policy on window air conditioning units and enforcement of it, Ristich told the Star.He added it’s the family’s understanding that “the rule was that you were only permitted to have an AC if it was over the balcony window.”The family believes that the AC unit that fell was over an open window, he said.The lawyer is encouraging people interested in helping to go to a GoFundMe page set up for the family.Toronto police were called to the corner of Lawrence Avenue East and Mossbank Drive around 3:45 p.m. Monday after reports that an air conditioning unit fell from the eighth floor.Paramedics rushed the toddler to Sick Kids Hospital with life-threatening injuries. She died in hospital.It is still not clear what caused the air conditioning unit to fall on the child. Police said no charges have been laid.“Any family going through this is a tragedy,” said Toronto police Const.
