I`ve mentioned several times my tutorial on updating an older phone to the very latest version of Windows 10 Mobile by spoofing it as a `Lumia 950 XL` - it`s a geeky procedure and not for the faint of heart. Which is perhaps why an enterprising guy in the UK has set up on eBay offering an upgrade service, essentially doing all the work for you for £30 (which sounds about right, for about a man hour of work), returning an older Lumia with the latest 1709 branch of Windows 10 Mobile, with or without your data (as required).
