Fire crews battling 5-alarm fire at York Memorial Collegiate in Toronto

Local residents were evacuated Tuesday morning as Toronto fire crews battle a stubborn five-alarm blaze at York Memorial C.I., the second fire in two days at the high school.Fire crews were first called to the school on Eglinton Ave. W. and Trethewey Dr. at around 2 p.m. Monday. They contained the three-alarm fire by 4 p.m., but a second fire was captured by a thermal imaging camera Tuesday overnight.Heavy smoke and flames can be seen coming out of the building, as fire crews continue trying to stamp out the blaze. “This is an extremely large building, there’s a considerable volume of smoke and flame inside the building,” fire chief Matthew Pegg told reporters early Tuesday morning. “We’re dealing with some initial structural collapse the command team has observed. We’re having to be very weary of falling debris and collapse.“We’re in for a long day here.”Pegg said firefighters are working with police to evacuate the south side of Eglinton from Trethewey to Bicknell Ave. because of the blowing smoke. He later said that police were expanding the evacuations southward.Pegg said the “complicated and complex” second fire is being handled separately from the first. The first fire is being investigated by fire marshalls and Toronto police, he said. “I won’t know much about origins of both fires until their investigation is completed,” Pegg said. Toronto police Supt. Ron Taverner told reporters that investigators were concerned that the first fire “may be suspicious.”Paramedics services say one person was treated for smoke inhalation Monday, but no serious injuries have been reported. Around 8:30 a.m., Pegg said that a fire crew had been evacuated from the roof due to the growth of the fire, and said they were adding aerial ladders to combat the blaze.The Toronto District School Board is advising students and staff from York Memorial to instead report to George Harvey C.I. a ...
