MONTEBELLO – Montebello High pitcher Christian Covarrubias knew that his team needed him to come through in a big way on Monday in the opener of their three-game series against Alhambra. Knowing that the pitching staff has been a work in progress all season, Oilers coach Manny Arana handed the ball to the senior hoping he´d get a quality outing. Covarrubias made his coach look like a prophet as he pitched five scoreless innings to help propel the host Oilers (19-7, 12-1) to a 3-0 win over the Moors. With the victory, Montebello has a 1 ½ game lead on the Moors (20-5-2, 10-2-1) in the Almont League heading to Tuesday´s game at Moor Field in Alhambra. A win by Montebello would seal the...
