MUMBAI: British era bridges criss-crossing the city´s suburban railway network will soon be history. Western Railway (WR) plans to demolish five bridges from the days of the Raj, starting with the Frere Road bridge near Charni Road. It will soon appoint a consultant to prepare a roadmap for reconstruction of all five bridges. The structural stability of the road over bridges (ROBs) has been under the scanner since the collapse of a portion of Gokhale Bridge in Andheri and the subsequent demolition of the one at Lower Parel after an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) experts-led inspection deemed it unsafe.
