A young Mississauga girl, the subject of a late-night Amber Alert after she was out on her 11th birthday with her father, has been found dead, Peel police say.Riya Rajkumar was found in a Brampton home near Hansen Rd. N. and Marshall Dr., hours after she vanished in the care of her father, 41-year-old Roopesh Rajkumar. The girl did not live with her father on a full-time basis, police said, but was dropped off at a gas station in Mississauga at about 3 p.m. Thursday was Riya’s 11th birthday, police said.“In a tragic situation like this when your daughter goes to spend her birthday, especially on Valentine’s Day, with her father and you expect your child to come home, my heart aches for this family,” Peel Region Const. Akhil Mooken told reporters shortly after the body was found. “As a parent, I can’t even begin to imagine what the mom is going through and it’s something that we never want to be involved in, but it’s a terrible situation.”Police said Riya’s mother called the authorities when the pair did not return at 6:30 p.m. and reported that Rajkumar made comments indicating he could cause harm to himself and his daughter. Police tweeted several hours later that a parental abduction investigation was underway.Emergency Management Ontario declared an Amber Alert and sent out mobile alerts just after 11:30 p.m. The alert was cancelled when it was reported that the child had been located in Brampton. Rajkumar was arrested by OPP near Orillia, Ont., about 130 km north of Brampton where Riya was found. Peel police spokesperson Const. Danny Marttini said Riya’s body was found in the Brampton house prior to Rajkumar’s arrest.The Peel Homicide and Missing Persons Bureau has taken over the case.No charges have been laid yet as of Friday morning.
