The principal and President of St. Michael’s College School have resigned in the wake of police investigations into alleged sexual assault of students by other students, a scandal that has rocked the school and community.The school announced in a release that Principal Greg Reeves and President Father Jefferson Thompson both resigned Thursday, “citing their shared desire to move the school forward without distractions and allow it to focus on healing and change after the horrific events of student misbehaviour that came to light last week.”As of Wednesday, the board of directors said it was “united” behind Reeves and Thompson.The board appointed Father Andrew Leung, a former science and physics teacher at the school, as interim president. He is currently pastor and rector of Edmonton parishes St. Alphonsus and St. Clare.Vice-principals Emile John and David Lee will share the duties of principal until a replacement is appointed.Six students have been arrested and charged with assault, gang sexual assault and sexual assault with a weapon after a video circulated on social media showing a teen boy being held down in a locker room and allegedly sexually assaulted with a broomstick.At least eight students have been expelled and one has been suspended over the locker room video and another video showing an alleged assault in a washroom.Questions were raised about who knew what and when, after police said St. Michael’s did not report the locker room video to them. St. Mike’s says it waited more than a day to report the video until after it completed an internal investigation. The school says it reported the washroom video to police the same day it was received.The school said it will soon launch a review of school culture, led by an independent third-party committee, that will “examine the traditions, rituals, and social practices of students at every grade level and in all areas of school life.”An anonymous voicema ...
