Study: Market boom fuels foundation gifts

Private foundations and their community peers had an average return on investment last year of about 15 percent of assets under management, the best gain since 2013, according to a joint study published in August by Commonfund and the Council on Foundations. That produced a ripple effect of increased gifts to nonprofits that rely on support from foundation coffers, Commonfund and the Council on Foundations determined. Of some 225 organizations participating in the study, nearly half of community foundations reported increasing their gifts and donations last year, from 34 percent in 2016 that did so. ......
