This is the only home Rohan Salmon has known since the day, almost 16 years ago, his car rolled over and left him a quadriplegic.Now he lies bedridden, catching his breath every time there is a knock on the door, afraid it could be the sheriff coming to take him away.The sheriff has already entered his apartment once — June 22 — to tell him that he has five days to leave or he would be evicted and delivered to the nearest hospital.“Please, sir, I am not a criminal,” Salmon cried as his caregiver, Julia, sobbed beside him. “What is going to happen to me? Where will you take me?”Now Salmon, 49, waits, unable to move from the extra-large bariatric hospital bed he has been in since 2005.The Richmond Hill assisted living residence took him in 15 years ago, promising to give him a safe and comfortable home for as long as he needed.Now Salmon has been told that because he did not pay a rent increase — one he says he never knew about — he must leave.Sunrise Senior Living said in an email from its head office in Virginia that, “due to privacy issues” it would be inappropriate to comment other than saying, “We strive to support our residents and families, and work with them directly to help ensure their experience meets their personal needs. This matter has been addressed by a tribunal of the Landlord and Tenant Board.”Salmon was 32, living in Cabbagetown and teaching English, when his life took a drastic turn.On Oct. 27, 2002, he went for a day trip with his students, who wanted to catch sight of the Muskoka autumn leaves. That afternoon, on the way north, on Hwy. 11 south of Bracebridge, the car driver, one of the students, fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle rolled four times.One of the students, aged 23, died. Rohan, still trapped in the car, was barely alive.He was airlifted to Sunnybrook where he stayed almost a year, then to Lyndhurst Centre for months of rehabilitation. He was paralyzed from ...
