A teenage boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries Monday night after a group of people were seen shooting fireworks at each other at Christie Pits Park.Video posted to Twitter Monday night by Nadia Jaber captured the fireworks battle at the park on Victoria Day. In the video, several people can be seen running around a grassy area near soccer goalposts and garbage bins, aiming fireworks at each other by hand. “At certain points, they started to get really, really intense,” Jaber told the Star. “And they shot at each other.”Jaber, who went to the park around 9 p.m., said the fireworks appeared to be Roman candles. She later uploaded about half the video she took at the park to Twitter.Toronto Paramedic Services spokesperson Kim McKinnon said paramedics were called at 9:41 p.m. Monday night and picked up the injured teen at Bloor and Christie Sts. McKinnon did not say whether the boy’s injuries were caused by fireworks. Jaber said she saw paramedics helping someone after she took the video, but did not see the injury.Toronto police said they received several calls about fireworks in the park, but made no arrests and are not currently investigating. Fireworks displays on private property are allowed on Victoria Day and Canada Day without a permit, according City of Toronto bylaws.“Other than sparklers, there’s no other consumer firework that we actually allow you to hold in your hand and light and keep it in your hand,” said Rachel Robbins, senior inspector of explosives of pyrotechnics-fireworks at Natural Resources Canada, the federal agency that regulates fireworks. “It always has to be set down and lit … when you do hold it in your hand or you do use it not (in accordance) with the label, then you do run the risk of what you saw in that video.” Robbins said that the first step, before even purchasing fireworks, is to make sure you have enough space.“When you go into the store and yo ...
