Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Justice said Monday morning that one of the victims killed in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash was mistakenly identified. Xavier Labelle was originally identified as among the 15 deceased in the horrific collision Friday evening.The ministry now says the body of Parker Tobin was mistaken for that of Labelle. “The Office of the Chief Coroner apologizes for the misidentification and any confusion created by it,” says a news release issued Monday morning. The ministry did not say how the mix-up occurred.Tobin, 18, was the team’s goalie, a native of Stony Plain, Alta. He played for the Spruce Grove Saints before joining the Broncos. The ministry says Labelle is injured but alive.Labelle, 18, is a defenceman from Saskatoon. He is a top student and a flourishing piano player. He is “very, very respectful and he worked very hard,” Jim McIntyre, governor of the Saskatoon Contacts, told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. Labelle played for the Contacts before the Broncos.Isaac Labelle eulogized his brother in an Instagram post Saturday, before the mistaken identity came to light. “I have no words to describe what I’m feeling. Best friends, teammates, allies, brothers,” he wrote. “We’ve been through so much together. We had a special bond from the day you were born.”Hundreds gathered in Humboldt for a vigil Sunday evening. They heard a heart-rending recollection from the team chaplain, who happened upon the gruesome scene and heard sounds of the dying. “We travelled up and arrived at the scene . . . and walked up on a scene I never want to see again,” Pastor Sean Brandow told the crowd at the Saskatchewan junior hockey team’s home arena. “To sounds I never want to hear again.”Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attended the vigil along with Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe.Trudeau visited survivors of the crash in a Saskatoon hospital earlier in the day.The team ...
