Watch live: Casting ballots with selfies? Wynne and the opposition discuss how to get out the youth vote
(The Star Toronto Raptors)

Jail time for scratching the vote? Casting ballots with only a hashtag and selfie? Statutory holidays on E-Day? Free swag for fulfilling a civic duty? It’s fun to imagine an unlikely scenario in which Premier Kathleen Wynne shoots a free T-shirt gun into a crowd of electors to convince them to show up to vote for her. But with just roughly half of eligible Ontarians showing up at the polls over the last decade, boosting turnout may require some out-of-the-box thinking. Don’t expect Wynne and her main political opponents — Progressive Conservative Interim Leader Vic Fedeli, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath or the Green Party’s Mike Schreiner — to give away all their campaign secrets, but they will offer up ideas to woo young and racialized voters into their camps for the June 7 election at a panel hosted by Ryerson University’s Faculty of Arts and moderated by the Star’s Queen’s Park columnist Martin Regg Cohn Wednesday afternoon. In 2014 the Liberals handily won a majority of seats in the legislature with just 38.7 per cent of the votes cast — and just 51.3 per cent of citizens showing up at the polls. Were almost half of Ontarians apathetic? Satisfied with the status quo? Uninformed? Uninspired? Lazy? The audience will also have an opportunity to grill the political party’s strategists on how they would improve democratic engagement with less than 100 days to go before the campaign kicks off. The lineup is David Herle, Liberal campaign director, Alykhan Velshi, the Tory leader’s chief of staff, former NDP president and current candidate Marit Stiles and Taylor Howarth, head of outreach for the Greens. Watch our livestream here beginning at 3 p.m.
