Press release: 11.621-181/17 Vienna,2017-09-20 - In the first six months of 2017 the provisional number of road traffic accidents accounted for 17 017 with 21 528 people injured. As Statistics Austria reports, the number of accidents decreased by 1.1% (-183) and the number of people injured declined by 1.0% (-212) compared to the first half of 2016. The number of persons killed (170) in road accidents fell by 20 or 10.5%, which is the lowest number of road deaths since 1961, the start of the systematic records. 120 (71%) deaths were caused by accidents in non-built-up areas, 50 (29%) on built-up roads.
