Claims by a former policeman that Environment Canterbury (ECan) smoke-spotters could be caught in the net used to catch peeping toms have been shot down in flames by the regional council. The man, who wished to remain anonymous, said he had 30 years` experience in the police and no other group in society would get away with looking into people`s homes after dark. The Summary Offences Act 1981 makes it an offence to `peep or peer` into a house after dark, or `loiter` on a property, and people convicted could be fined up to $500.
