Ethiopia Turns on Turbines at the Largest Hydropower Plant in Africa

On Sunday, February 20th, Ethiopia turned on the turbines at its multi-billion dollar hydropower plant on the River Nile for the first time. The plant has been in construction since 2011 for $4.2 billion, as reported by the BBC, it is the largest Hydropower Plant on the African continent. Ethiopia aims to bring power to 60% of its population who currently do not have access to power. It is estimated to produce 5,000 megawatts of electricity once it is completed, doubling Ethiopia`s current national electricity output.
