According to the US Patent and Trademark Office, ownership of the patents was transferred to Huawei on December 23rd.
Following a report from The Globe and Mail stating that BlackBerry had sold off 90 key smartphone technology patents to Huawei, BlackBerry CFO Steve Rai confirmed the deal yesterday during a JP Morgan virtual investor conference.
According to the US Patent and Trademark Office, ownership of the patents was transferred to Huawei on December 23rd. Speaking of the deal, Steve Rai noted they were a `very small number of patents that are no longer relevant to the business. So, small sale, not part of our recurring transaction. And certainly, it was permitted under the applicable rules.`
Since 2014 when BlackBerry launched their BlackBerry Technology Solutions (BTS) business unit, they have been maximizing their efforts to license or sell some of their 38,000 patents held which inlcude those from QNX, Certicom, Paratek and more.
