Tent cities highlight homeless crisis

Nothing like a pandemic to underline the crisis of homelessness in Toronto. When crowding in the shelter system made sleeping outside a better choice to dodge COVID-19, local charities gave tents to the homeless. Tent cities sprang up in parks all over the city. It’s not a pretty picture. Mental health and addiction issues are rife among the homeless population and some tenting areas are public health hazards of discarded needles, garbage and human waste — as you’d anticipate, given the lack of bathrooms and other facilities. There are bylaws against camping or living in any Toronto park. The city sends in staff to take down tents and dismantle these ad hoc communities....
