The number of coronavirus infections in Florida surpassed 50,000 on Saturday as state officials attributed 44 more deaths to COVID-19, the respiratory infection brought on by the virus. Five of those deaths, which occurred over a 24-hour period, were in the Tampa Bay area — two in Hillsborough, two in Pinellas and one in Manatee counties. That brings the total number of lives lost to the coronavirus in Florida to 2,312, according to data from the Florida Health Department.
