A day of heavy snowfall marked Toronto’s earliest significant winter weather in nearly 70 years, Environment Canada says. As snow blanketed the city Monday, Torontonians donned heavy jackets and winter boots while city employees rushed to spread salt and sand across roadways and sidewalks.By 8 p.m., a total of 10 centimetres of snow had covered the city — with more expected to fall by midnight.The last time a significant snowfall occurred this early in the year was Nov. 6, 1951, Environment Canada climatologist Dave Phillips said.That’s when the city was hit with 13.2 centimetres of snow, though Phillips expects that record could be broken. “This is a big one,” he said. “It’s a big storm for November. Usually we get big rain events at this time of year rather than snowfalls, and this isn’t even the middle of November yet when it starts to come down lightly.”The TTC kept crews on standby in case of weather disruptions. Around 7 p.m., they tweeted that the planned closure on the Yonge-University line was being called off Monday due to weather conditions.At Pearson, passengers were urged to check with their airlines to see if there were any delays to their flights and to come to the airport early. According to its website, more than 17.7 per cent of departures and 17.5 per cent of arrivals had been cancelled as of 8 p.m. Monday.Though it caused some delays, not everyone was bothered by the weather. “I love these snowfalls,” said Louise Long, a downtown Toronto resident. “Sure, it was a bit of a surprise, but I haven’t had trouble getting around despite the cold.” In other areas of the city, Toronto police reported a “significant” increase in vehicle collisions throughout the day.Around 2 p.m., five vehicles collided at the intersection of McCowan Road and St. Andrews Road.
