Japan PM Abe to declare state of emergency amid widespread virus infections

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is set to declare a state of emergency on Tuesday for Tokyo, Osaka and five additional prefectures in an effort to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. The declaration, which will be in place for a month after taking effect Wednesday, will enable prefectural governors to take stronger preventive steps, ranging from instructing citizens to stay at home to restricting the operation of schools and other facilities. It will not lead to lockdowns on a scale seen in other countries hit hard by the virus like China and France due to the limits of the Japanese law on which the declaration will be based.
