In Italy, the numbers have told a grim story, growing exponentially every few days. The country had more than 1,000 people infected with the coronavirus on Feb. 29, more than 5,000 on March 7, more than 10,000 on March 10, more than 20,000 on March 14 and more than 30,000 on March 17. As of Saturday, the death toll approached 5,000.
