Canon`s EOS-1D X Mark III brings a new sensor, Dual Pixel AF and 5.5K Raw video
(Digital Photography Review)

Canon likes to debut its professional cameras before the Olympic Games, and the new EOS-1D X Mark III is here a few months away from the Summer Games in Tokyo. Given the four years since the 1D X Mark II was introduced, it should come as no surprise that the Mark III has significant upgrades. It starts with a new 20MP full-frame CMOS sensor that uses a `high-detail` low-pass filter, plus the new Digic X processor. Canon says that the Digic X boosts image processing speeds by three times compared to the Mark II, and boosts Dual Pixel AF processing by 380 times. There`s also now a dedicated Digic 8 processor for autofocus and metering through the viewfinder. When shooting through the viewfinder you`ll get a new 191-point AF system with 155 cross-type points. The AF detectors themselves are now two-dimensional pixel arrays as opposed to line sensors, allowing for pinpoint accuracy and better focus on low contrast subjects. The AF system now offers head and face tracking trained using `deep learning`. In live view you get Dual Pixel AF that has 90% horizontal and 100% vertical coverage plus face and eye detection. The camera can shoot bursts at 16 fps using the viewfinder and 20 fps in live view. The buffer is gigantic, able to take over 1000 shots per burst. The 1D X III offers 10-bit HDR photos in the HEIF image format, making it one of the first cameras that looks beyond 8-bit JPEGs and provides out-of-camera images that better exploit modern sensors and displays. Not only are HEIF images typically smaller than their JPEG counterparts (thanks to higher efficiency), Canon`s choice to encode a wider range of tones using the PQ gamma curve means images will have more dynamic range, contrast and wider colors when viewed on an HDR monitor. The 1D X Mark III sets a new standard for DSLR video. It can record 12-bit 5.5K/60p Raw video internally at blistering bit rate of 2600 Mbps (or a mere 1800 Mbps at 24p or 30p). It can also capture uncropped DCI 4K ...
