Ford defends $231M in cancellation costs for green energy projects
(The Star Science)

Premier Doug Ford says it’s not a waste of taxpayers’ money to earmark $231 million in compensation costs for almost 800 renewable energy projects his government axed shortly after taking power this year.“No,” Ford told reporters when asked Thursday about criticisms over the pending payouts, saying the projects — including the White Pines wind farm in Prince Edward County — were cancelled to keep electricity bills from going higher.“I’m so proud of that,” he added during a brief news conference before the legislature’s daily question period.“I’m proud that we actually saved the taxpayers $790 million when we cancelled those terrible, terrible wind turbines.”Green Leader Mike Schreiner said Ford’s remarks were “alarming,” given that many jurisdictions are rushing to boost the supply of green energy in the face of climate change. “It is outrageous that the premier feels ‘proud’ about ripping up clean energy contracts at a cost of $231 million to the people of Ontario,” he said in a statement.“Ford’s attack on clean energy will keep Ontario in the dark ages while the rest of the world transitions to a prosperous economic future.”NDP Leader Andrea Horwath repeated her calls for Ford’s Progressive Conservative government to call in auditor general Bonnie Lysyk to audit the payouts.Rob Ferguson is a Toronto-based reporter covering Ontario politics.
