Time to break out the heavy coat and winter boots, Toronto — the snow has arrived. By 3 p.m., five centimetres of snow had accumulated at Pearson airport, Environment Canada meteorologist Peter Kimbell said.According to Environment Canada, the city can expect anywhere between 10 to 15 centimetres of snow by Monday evening.“Historically, it’s rare for Toronto to receive 5cm+ of snow in a single snowfall during the first half of November (i.e. before November 15),” Eric Holmes, spokesperson for City of Toronto, said in an email. “And it’s estimated that this could be the earliest significant snow event (5+ cm) for Toronto since 2007.”According to the City of Toronto, a round of salt was being applied where required on some main roads as of Monday morning.“Salt trucks are the first line of defence when the snow falls,” Holmes said. “All 200 were sent out this morning. Plows will be sent out on expressways and major roads when there’s between 2.5 to 5 cm of snow accumulation, possibly later this afternoon/early evening.”Holmes urged people to leave extra time for travel and to stay back from trucks and road crews throughout the day.“The snow will pick up in intensity during (Monday) afternoon,” said meteorologist Kelly Hobelman from Environment Canada. “It looks like we’ll get about five to 10 centimetres of snow during the day and an additional of two to four centimetres of snow in the evening.” The temperature is predicted to remain steady Monday afternoon at -2 C, but it could feel like -11 C because of the wind chill. The temperature will drop further to a low of -8 C by the evening, but will feel like -15 C with the wind chill. The TTC is not expecting any interruptions in service due to weather, but has crews on standby just in case, a spokesperson said.
