Toronto braces for first snowstorm of season with up to 14 cm of snow expected; `significant snowfall´ to hit Halton area

Gear up for more snow, Toronto. This one may require you to pull out the shovels for the first time this season. Toronto is about to get up to 10 centimetres of snow starting Sunday night going into Monday afternoon, according to Environment Canada. “The snow will pick up in intensity during (Monday) afternoon,” said meteorologist Kelly Hobelman from Environment Canada. “It looks like we’ll get about five to 10 centimetres of snow during the day and an additional of two to four centimetres of snow in the evening.” In total, it’s predicted that Toronto could get around seven to 14 cm of snow by Monday night. The snow isn’t expected to accumulate in the morning, but a few centimetres of snow will need to be shovelled by the evening. The temperature is predicted to remain steady Monday afternoon at -2 degrees Celsius, but it could feel like -12 C because of the wind chill. This temperature will further drop to a low -8 C by Monday night, but will feel like -15 C with the wind chill. Residents to the west of Toronto should also brace themselves for some winterlike weather and some tough travel conditions for their commute into work Monday.City of Toronto spokesperson, Eric Holmes, advised people to plan for tomorrow’s travel tonight, and to consider public transit or working from home if possible.“We’re asking everyone to be patient tomorrow. It’s rare for Toronto to get significant snowfall this early in the winter season,” he said in a statement.Environment Canada issued a special weather statement calling for up to 10 to 15 cm of snow in Oakville and Burlington on Sunday night going into Monday.“Due to lake enhancement, areas near the Hamilton and Niagara region have the potential to receive near 10 to 15 cm snow by Monday evening,” the statement read.Holmes said salt trucks normally go out first (likely very early in the morning) and plows will be sent out on expressways and majo ...
