Before Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney decided to press the pause button on The Black Keys, the blues-rock duo hadn’t even been thinking of taking a break. Formed in 2001 in Akron, Ohio, the childhood pals had been steadily recording albums and touring since their 2002 debut The Big Come Up. But following a gruelling trek for 2014’s gold-selling Turn Blue, the 39-year-old drummer says it was time for a break. “It seemed like every time we made a record as The Black Keys, we had to stay out on the road for a year.
