The Narendra Modi government on Thursday jumped onto the bandwagon of loan melas - a throwback to the irresponsible, indiscriminate lending policy adopted by the Congress administration in the early 1980s - in a desperate attempt to revive a stuttering economy. After a brainstorming meeting with the chief executives of public sector banks, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman told reporters that the banks would hold meetings with representatives of non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) and prospective clients in 400 districts across the country to ensure that anyone who seeks a loan gets it.
