My father, Clement Dodd, who has died aged 93, was a political scientist and academic, an expert in modern Turkish politics and democracy. He was deeply interested in the relationship between Turkey and Cyprus, and became one of the most respected commentators on Cypriot affairs in the UK. Born in Chester, the son of well-to-do farmers and family butchers, Margaret May (nee Harris) and Arthur Dodd, he won a scholarship to the King´s School, Chester. He went on to the School of Oriental and African Studies (Soas) in London aged 17 to study Turkish and Persian, his interest in the Middle East inspired by a history teacher at school.
