CALGARY—The RCMP says it has found two bodies believed to be Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky, two young men from British Columbia allegedly involved in the deaths of three people who have led police on a cross-country manhunt for more than two weeks.Assistant Commissioner Jane MacLatchy of the Manitoba RCMP said the bodies were found on Wednesday morning. An autopsy to formally identify the bodies and determine their cause of death will be done in Winnipeg, but MacLatchy said she’s confident they are McLeod, 19, and Schmegelsky, 18.“At this time, we believe these are the bodies of the two suspects wanted in connection with the homicides in British Columbia,” she told reporters on Wednesday afternoon. The bodies were found by RCMP officers doing a foot search through dense brush at around 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning, roughly eight kilometres from where a burned-out Toyota RAV4 used by the pair had been found in the Gillam area.A person at the McLeod home in Port Alberni, B.C., hung up their phone on a Star Vancouver reporter attempting to reach the family for comment on Wednesday afternoon.RCMP officers and Canadian Armed Forces personnel had failed to find the pair despite an exhaustive search. MacLatchy said the discovery of “items directly linked to the suspects” on Friday along the shores of Manitoba’s Nelson River helped officers narrow down the search. The bodies were found roughly a kilometre away from the items, she told reporters.Read more: ‘Several items’ linked to northern B.C. murder suspects found on Manitoba shoreline: RCMPB.C. fugitives’ fate ‘anyone’s guess,’ says survival instructor, as divers wrap up Manitoba river search As manhunt drags on, Chynna Deese’s family worries they might never get answers if suspects aren’t caught alivePolice had been searching for McLeod and Schmegelsky in the area around Gillam since July 23.
