(The Star Books)

Monday will mark one year since a shooting on Danforth Ave. that killed two people and injured 13. Several city-organized and community events are planned for this weekend and Monday to commemorate the July 22, 2018 shooting. The family of Julianna Despina Kozis, the 10-year-old girl who was shot while out for ice cream on the Danforth, is marking the anniversary by launching a foundation in her name. The other person killed was 18-year-old Reese Fallon, who was set to begin nursing school at McMaster University.City of Toronto commemorative ceremony: July 21The city’s ceremony will be led by Toronto Police Services Chaplain Rev. Wendell Gibbs. It will include a choral presentation by the Interfaith Choir on the Danforth, a reading of the names of the deceased and placement of flowers in remembrance and a moment of silence. The Faith Community on the Danforth will read a statement, and City of Toronto poet laureate Al Moritz will read an original poem. The ceremony takes place at 1:30 p.m. at the northeast corner of Withrow Park, 725 Logan Ave. There will be a City of Toronto water truck in the park, and a small selection of refreshments will be provided by the Broadview Danforth BIA. The City of Toronto Community Safety and Wellbeing Unit, Victim Services Toronto and St. John’s Ambulance, including therapy dogs, will be in the park for anyone needing support or resources. The Broadview Danforth BIA is also offering t-shirts that say #DanforthStrong to those attending the ceremonies. #DanforthStrong night run: July 21 Days after the tragedy, more than 100 runners gathered along the Danforth at 10 p.m., around the time the shooting took place. Another run is planned for this year on July 21 at 9 p.m. The run is starting at the McDonald’s at Coxwell and Danforth, which was also the site of a fatal double shooting in 2015. The three-kilometre run will end at the Alexander the Great Parkette and fountain, where the shooting began.City of Toronto co ...
