If Janet Riffle had chosen any other store to buy the gift cards, or gone any other time of day, the scammers might have made off with her savings. But luck was on her side March 12. That morning, Riffle, an 83-year-old widower who lives on Akron Road, got a call from a man claiming to be her grandson, Chad McHenry, who works as a corrections officer at a federal prison in North Carolina. The caller said he was in trouble.
