Downpour lashes Kolkata after squall storms in at 68kmph

KOLKATA: Darkness descended on the city around 5.20pm, almost half an hour before sunset on Friday evening even as winds stormed in at a top speed of 68 km per hour. This was followed by steady showers that lasted an hour, leaving a trail of uprooted trees that brought the evening traffic to a crawl. As the 10-12-km column of cumulonimbus cloud towered over the city, followed by a severe squall and downpour, the mercury that soared to a maximum level of 34.6°C plunged three-four notches down.
