OTTAWA — Nearly 24 hours into a marathon parliamentary voting session that the Conservative Opposition forced in protest over the SNC-Lavalin scandal, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau almost lost his government.It was a riveting moment in yet another nerve-wracking day for the Trudeau government, which is under round-the-clock fire over its alleged political meddling in the criminal prosecution of SNC-Lavalin. Conservatives, angered that Liberal MPs on Tuesday shut down the justice committee’s probe into the SNC-Lavalin allegations, have moved to start another committee investigation — this one by the Commons ethics committee. And they are using a procedural move to require MPs to stand and vote on every line in a money supply bill. Every one of 257 line items in the bill is considered a confidence vote, meaning if the Liberals don’t have enough members in the Commons to win each and every vote, the government would be defeated after losing the confidence of the House.Late Thursday afternoon, after vote #125, several dozen Liberal MPs and cabinet ministers, punch-drunk with fatigue, ties hanging loose, and irritated at yet another damaging headline earlier that day, were mingling near or outside the Commons chamber, when the next question to be voted was read aloud by the Speaker. Liberals MPs and ministers rushed back into the chamber.The Conservatives and New Democrats howled in outrage, repeatedly demanding the Speaker discount their votes. A Liberal deputy speaker, Anthony Rota, was chair as mayhem erupted. For nearly an hour, the government’s fate hung in the balance. The Conservatives claimed to have identified 51 Liberal MPs who were not in their chairs in time to legally vote and demanded the Speaker review videotapes. Conservative House leader Candice Bergen slammed the Liberals for “sitting on cots, taking naps, hanging out in Camp Cover-up” outside the chamber, saying they could not now claim the right to vote &# ...
